You have 5 hours:

Seriously--someone buy these. I don't have a beach house yet and not a lot of storage space so they're out for me.

But really, someone can give these Lilly glasses a good home.

O bids, ladies. Go!

SnB

I tried out a knitting group last night. It was held in a Somerville craft studio, so I figured it would be hip, but I don't think I was prepared for just how hip it would be.

Let's start at the beginning. I'm a knitter. My mother, I would say, is a Knitter. These women were Knitters. Lace? Yes. Beading? Yes. Bat shaped lace? Why, yes. Intarsia? Yes. Argyle? Yes.

They seemed a little out of my league. Seriously, they were engaged in some sort of Ravelry knitting competition.

Also, they've all known each other for a long time and are a close group and I'm just not sure they want other people joining the group. Only 3 people introduced themselves and no one asked what I was knitting.

And just to let you know, I actually tried. I told stories about that time Nathan and I hid mustard in the Rome airport and a special I watched on the British History Channel in Bulgaria about leprosy. I'm engaging. I'm interesting. (I think)

Oh well. At least I went. Next week I'm going to try a group closer to home.

FYI

If you ever go into an office for a meeting and the receptionist asks if you would like something to drink, you had better get that drink then or forever hold your peace. Please DO NOT wait for the person who you are meeting with to come up and then accept their offer of a drink because it makes the receptionist look terrible. Seriously. Either you're thirsty or you aren't.

Also, Nathan found me more treasures on the street last night. I love it when he opens the door and says "I have a surprise for you!" Last night the surprise was a metal barn store--just like I wanted to hang in our living room! I'm so excited. Here's hoping he finds a 2 foot clock next--the cheapest one I've seen was $50.

Shop it to me!

I didn't have a chance to take picture of my bag, but here's a ebay picture of it. So cute! Also, some of you may have gotten emails from me asking if you wanted to join Shop It To Me! The site records your information and send you emails when your favorites brands (in your sizes!) go on sale. And y'all know I never pay full price for anything, so I love it! If this sounds good to you, then sign up via the email I sent!

Confession

1. It was chilly this morning and I wanted a pumpkin spice latte soooo bad. Here's the problem: coffee makes me sick now (why?!?!?) and it isn't in stores yet. I'd also settle for a caramel apple cider, but that's like drinking diabetea and we can't start that so early in the season.

2. I can't stop touching my bag. My new Banana Republic "I'm a grown up and can afford nice things" bag came in the mail yesterday and I have it sitting next to me because I keep absent-mindedly stroking it! The leather just feels so good!

Weekend Update

Nathan and I had such a low-key weekend. It was so great. After running around for the past few weeks trying to get a million things done, we actually just relaxed all weekend.

Friday night, we hung out with the Baby Girls while their parents went on a date downtown. After they fell asleep, we took advantage of the wonders of digital cable and re-watched the last episodes of last season's The Office (without the commercials, of course). I also got to watch a bit of the behind-the-scenes special that aired with The Hills last Monday, but unfortunately only the first 30 minutes were taped so I missed the second half.

I finished knitting the back of the sweater I'm working on, but I have to frog the entire thing. I don't know if my gauge changed drastically from when I started the sweater in December (I left it at home while we were abroad) or if I just totally messed it up, but it's huge. Really, really huge. The good news is that it's a fast knit, so re-working it won't be painful at all.

Saturday we went to the library (my favorite Saturday morning activity) and I soaked in the smells and came away with way too many books to carry home on the T. Oh well...I did it anyway. I love libraries (always have) and Boston's is amazing.

After the library, we hit UBurger (and finally found the perfect amount of food to order--usually we wind up with way too much food), hit the art supply store and then Coldstone (because Nathan loves ice cream). Can we talk about how excited I was to see that Coldstone now offers a plain frozen yogurt? Mmm...it took me right back to delicious plain frozen yogurt in Bulgaria.

Speaking of Bulgaria, we are craving banitsa. Could someone send us some? Thanks.

I bought a cool book of postcards that depict Old Boston so I framed some of them yesterday. It's so fun seeing these old photos of places we go all the time like Copley and Comm Ave and the Public Garden.

Sunday I made an almost vegan (it had honey) blueberry coffee cake before church and then after church we hit Trader Joe's to stock up for the week. In Trader Joe's we ran into an old friend from high school--crazy. We had no idea that we all lived up here, let alone in the same neighborhood.

We then went to a famous bagel bakery in our neighborhood that was amazingly delicious and so much cheaper than any other bagel place I've ever been to. 6 bagels, cream cheese and smoked salmon for $10? Um...yes.

Once we finally got home it was lazy weekend stuff--reading cookbooks, playing board games, you know--the usual.

Hope you all have a fantastic week!

I promise I'm not a materialistic brat...

But...I am saying that the Emma Monogram Sandal at
Stephen Bonanno Sandals
is $40 off right now and I would love a pair in Regal Blue with Shell whipstitch. I need new navy sandals because mine broke this year from too much commuting!

A Few Tips

Tip 1: Looking to make friends in a new city? Carry around an orchid.

My office has a plant service and gets new orchids every month. The old ones can be taken home by anyone who wants them. Yesterday, I got to take home the orchid (which is now sitting pretty in my living room). Anyway, while carrying the orchid to the T (yes, I took a fragile tropical plant on the T at rush hour and so far it has lived to tell about it) 5 people spoke to me. 5 people! On the street! In a major US city! It was awesome.

Tip 2: Be careful slicing bagels! I have now joined the ranks of the millions of Americans who are injured every year slicing bagels. Much like my cheese-slicing injury in Bulgaria, my bagel-slicing injury came about as I tried to slice a bagel and talk to Nathan at the same time. FYI--bread knife cuts hurt really, really bad.

Tip 3: If you live in Boston and need a new license, go to the RMV in Chinatown. It's huge and we were in and out with our out-of-state conversions in less than 45 minutes. Also, we both look freakishly thin in our photos and are now registered to vote. That's right--we are official citizens of Massachusetts now!

Tip 4: If you compulsively try to match your current mileau and the music playing in the background, go to Pandora.com and type in Aberfeldy. Aberfeldy is an awesome band that Nathan turned me on to and the resulting mix perfectly sums up September to me. Yes, I realize that it is not quite September, but it feels like September, OK?

Oh, and PS--Pandora is awesome. Learn to love it. I use it to daily match my music to my mood. Love it, love it, love it. Also, what's not cool about saying you are involved in the music genome project?

Wish List!

Fall is definitely in the air today in Boston. It's unseasonably cool (around 65) and feels oh-so-good! I woke up craving some apple cider or maybe a pumpkin muffin and definitely pulled the comforter tighter over me while I laid in bed and tried to decide how I would make our bedroom walls look if I had unlimited time and money. Does anyone else think about decorating as much as I do? Seriously.

Anywhere, the fallish breezes put me in a wish list making mood, so here are a few things that I will be asking for my birthday and Christmas this year:

First off, I've fallen head-over-heels in love with the Yellow Bird pattern from Vera Bradley. So gorgeous! Also, I used to think the Tic Tac Tote was so stupid looking. Then, Roommate BFF bought one in the Cambridge pattern and once I saw it in real life I realized what a cool style it is. Love it.Yellow Bird Large Tic Tac Tote--$69

I'm love, love, loving these state pillows. Follow the link and you can see an image of each state. I'd love to have Massachusetts and North Carolina. I have dreams of these on a linen covered couch someday. We'll see.
Hand Embroidered State Pillows--$149.95

This is one of my favorite styles of picture frames. There is a big blank spot on my living room wall just waiting to be filled with something this lovely.

Wedding Fancy Frame--$65.00

Believe it or not, I have no jewelry with my new monogram on it. This bracelet could change all that!

Pewter Large Cuff Bracelet--$30.00

I'm asking Nathan for this sweet necklace for Christmas with our names on it. I love that it's handmade!

The Original Necklace--$44.00

I feel like I needed this hoodie this morning. In all actuality, I probably didn't since it is lined in fleece, but I'm sure I will need it soon.

Fleece-lined Hoodie--$49.50

My in-laws bought me a giant duffle like this in pink and I love it to pieces. I'd love to get a smaller size in green for shorter trips.
Medium Rolling Adventure Duffle--$79.00

These pants look great for work. And, bonus, I can get them hemmed any length I would like!

Curvy No-Waist Commuter Trousers--$79.00

Cashmere mock turtleneck? Yes, please!

High Mock Cashmere Sweater--$99.50

This coat looks super warm and it comes in brown or navy blue. This is a need, not a want.
Petite Reversible Quilted Down Coat--$99.50

These boots are also a need. They look so warm!

Shearling Boots--$89.50

Love this print. Love how almost every decorator I admire has it somewhere in their house.

Keep Calm and Carry On Poster--$25.00

I want a really, really big clock for our living room. This fits the bill.

Unfortunately, this one is sold out, but you still get the idea.

So here's a question...

Since Nathan started working a few weeks ago, my entire morning routine has changed. Now two of us have to shower, I have two lunches to pack and I have to devote some time to just get Nathan to wake up. Seriously--our biorhythms are so different and he finds it really hard to wake up before 9 am, while I find it really hard to be awake after 10 pm.

Anyway, here's the thing: I used to work out in the mornings before work, but it's no longer working.

So when do you work out? Have any tips for me? I usually don't want to work out in the evening because I have to urba-lates it up for 45 minutes to get home and then I cook supper and spend a little time with Nathan. (We usually play Carcassone, by the way).

So....give me your tips, suggestions, experiences. I'm listening!

Scenes from the life of newlyweds...

Yesterday after church, Nathan and I visited Boston Common to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Freedom Trail. His Majesty George III's troops were camped out on the Common. They looked hot--bear skin hats and wool uniforms do not bode well in the August heat. My favorite sight? 6 British officers sitting at a picnic table eating funnel cakes.

For the past few nights, Nathan and I have entertained ourselves by playing board games. Truly, this is what happens when you don't have television.

Nathan is hanging up our new picture frames right now. We still don't have a hammer, so his tools of choice? A soup ladle and a rock.

Pictures? Yes, please!

I promise that I tried to get more pictures on here, but, alas, it didn't work. Anyway, here's some shots with a few of the BFFs.

Here's my darling little and I drinking chai out of my Kate Spade wedding china. Love it!And here's the Yankee BFF and I in Maine:

The Best Girls

So my birthday is in about 3 and 1/2 months. That makes it about 5 months to Christmas. Please, someone, buy me this shirt:

It can be purchased here. Thanks!

Did I tell you about the turtle?

On Sunday, a 300 pound, 6-foot long turtle washed up on the beach. Yankee BFF and I investigated, of course. The turtle no longer had a shell and had been decomposing for quite some time. The area was blocked off and all sort of officials were standing around trying to figure out what to do with it and where it came from. Crazy.

Weekend Update

Oh goodness. We keep having really, really full weekends that leave me exhausted when Monday morning rolls around. Oh well.

Saturday we scrubbed the entire apartment from top to bottom. Weekend activities paired with now being DINKs (double-income, no kids) had left the abode a little messy. Well, it's not messy anymore and I couldn't be happier!

Sunday we traveled up to Maine to see the Yankee BFF and her family. Hopefully I can get some pictures up from that. See, we don't actually pay for our internet, but rather get on an open wireless network in our community. This is great until you want really super fast internet and then...well, you're up the creek.

Oh, my oh-so-fun sorority little sister is coming to Boston tomorrow and I'm so excited I can hardly stand it!

Oh yes, and the weather has substantially cooled off enough that serious knitting can happen. I need to get these projects done because I think I need some new mittens...how fun!

Presents! Surprises!

Today was a day full of surprises! Nathan and I went to the post office this morning to pick up some packages that needed a signature. Lo and behold, we had packages from my parents AND his parents.

My parents sent me a box of Earl Gray Lavender tea and a bar of homemade peach soap for "just because" surprise. His parents sent him some clothes and some souvenirs for us from France. Now, we visited them in France a few months ago and considered that visit our souvenir. We definitely did not expect other presents!

Still, they sent me a beautiful shawl, a bottle of perfume from a perfumery we toured where they lived in Grasse, a Provence hand towel, a lavender sachet and a wall hanging (not pictured). They sent Nathan some delicious French dark chocolate with orange bits that he fell in love with while we were over there.

THEN, Nathan ran to the store to pick up a lime so I can make some vegan lime bars for when we go visit Yankee BFF and her family tomorrow in Maine. When he came back, he brought with him two dozen sustainably grown yellow roses--one of my favorites!

Here you can see all my presents except the tapestry:
Oh, and to read about our adventures in France (as well as Bulgaria, Greece, Turkey and Italy), pay a visit to Nathan and Rachel Ann Take on the World!

Not a regular August...

According to my brother, the fact that college is really, truly over hits you around October when you're jonesing for a fall break and you realize that people in the "real world" don't take those.

I think the fact that college is really, truly over is hitting me now because it's August and I'm not moving in early for Summit Orientation. I have no quad to meet Nathan on after class. I'm not buying textbooks. I'm not color-coding my planner with the information from all my syllabi.

At least I'm doing fabulous new things now like making dinner and spending all my time with Nathan and not having to track him (and his dead cellphone) down. We go to the grocery store and saute vegetables together. We no longer just pick out movies for Saturday nights, but rather pick out movies any night of the week we want. We no longer have to schedule our time around meetings and homework, but instead we know that 6 pm-7 am is just for us.

It's different, but it's nice.

Mmm...food...

Two quick thoughts about food (and a bonus thought about Alex and Wendy):

1. I've been eating reduced-fat Triscuits. I was intrigued by them and so bought them--didn't Triscuits originally exist to be the low-fat cracker? Isn't this like buying extra-low-calorie Fresca? Anyway, they taste as delicious as ever. I love that Triscuits remind me of Bible School snacks.

2. I made this pizza soup in the Crockpot yesterday. Yummy. This is definitely added into our meal rotation. We used veggie pepperoni and Italian sausage (obviously) which cut out almost all of the fat. Again, super yummy with a salad and flatbread. It seemed like something children would really like too. Oh, and we have days and days of leftovers.

Bonus thought: I rode the elevator with "Alex" the other day and got a peek at his nametag. He is officially freaked out by me now. Seriously. The man looks really uncomfortable when he sees me. Anyway, I learned his real name and that his security clearance expires at the end of September. Oh no!

Note to Self

If you purchase really cute Wellies on sale, then please, please, please check the weather forecast before leaving the house.

...all this rain and I have no Wellies, no umbrella, no raincoat. Boo.

Not gonna lie...

A few years back, a wonderful tradition fell into my lap: Ladies of the Lake.

Ladies of the Lake is a beautiful time of relaxation, shopping, ice cream, bad movies and fun at the Princess family compound in the NC mountains. While only a two-year tradition (and it is staying a two-year tradition because two of us are married, one's in grad school and one lives in the North now), it spawned many a catch-phrase, theme song, mix cd and comical rendition of praise song dance moves. I'm just saying.

Anyway, one such phrase that was uttered about a hundred thousand times during the inaugural Ladies of the Lake is "not gonna lie." Well, I'm not gonna lie, Boston today feels just like that warmish, coolish October weekend when Ladies of the Lake first came into being.

Not gonna lie, it feels amazing. Not gonna lie, I'm scared for February if this is August. Not gonna lie, I'm excited about wearing jeans and a long-sleeved tee to the grocery store tonight.

Oh, and not gonna lie--the Cape was beautiful. It was hot, but not sticky. Sunny, but not unbearable. Breezy, but not windy.

Here are one of my favorite pictures from this weekend:
I'll post more if the internet ever speeds back up.

Oh, and for the love of fall (and I do love fall--I mean, you can't beat pumpkin soy milk!), drop by and see Alex at Running Just as Fast as I Can and sign up for the fall swap. I did!

Oh yeah, and a huge congratulations to my Mama and Daddy who have been married for 35 years today! Wow!

In other news...

1. Am I the only crafty person in the world that cannot have more than one project going at once? Seriously--it makes me anxious to think about starting a project when I have one unfinished? Is this odd? I do have a tendency to have anxiety about things others do not.

2. Nathan and I went out the other night and I watched girls studying together at Panera and I almost cried that I don't get to study anymore. Nathan suggested I undertake a series of self-improvements and study up on things, but that won't do because I'd really miss the grades.

3. I started planning our Christmas cards today. I'll add them to the list of "crafty projects that need to be completed as soon as possible after the 100 pound knitting is completed."

4. That project gets heavier every day.

Juxtaposition

I'm the only admin person here in the office today.

This a few implications as the main bullet point of my job description is ANSWER THE PHONE. What, specifically, you might ask does this mean when I'm the only person here?
Answer: take the portable phone with you when you go to the restroom.

The problem? I can't stop drinking mugs of Constant Comment tea.
